Walk this way

Celebrate National Walking Month with coastal walks from Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa in Newquay.

Share post

With Atlantic views and scenic paths on the doorstep, National Walking Month in May is the ideal excuse to slow down and discover Cornwall on foot from Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa.

Step outside the hotel and you can join the South West Coast Path, part of the newly inaugurated King Charles III England Coast Path (KCIII ECP), which links some of England’s most striking coastal scenery. Newquay sits on the South West Atlantic coast section of the KCIII ECP revealing rugged cliffs, sandy bays and wide-open sea views.

Routes from the front door

From Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa, walks of every kind begin from our front door, as we’re on the South West Coast Path (now the KCIII ECP too).

Opt to turn right outside the hotel and head out along Fistral Beach towards Newquay, taking in the changing colours of the ocean and the buzz of the beach below. Discover the shops, cafés and attractions of our vibrant town as well as many more striking beaches as the coast winds north.

Or head left out of the hotel for a walk heading towards Crantock and The Gannel, where estuary views, sandy paths and a quieter stretch of coastline await. For a sunset spot, you can’t beat a walk out to the end of Pentire Headland.

Tide conditions can affect crossings around The Gannel, so it is worth checking ahead before setting out. Trenance Bridge may be inaccessible at high tides and Penpol boardwalk is only passable 3–4 hours either side of the tide. The optional route inland via Trevemper Bridge is available at all times.

For a longer walk, continue beyond Crantock towards Porth Joke (looking out for seals in the cove) and onto the dramatic sand dunes of Holywell Bay.

Finding your way

Look out for an acorn on posts and waymarkers signifying the South West Coast Path. These also apply to the KCIII ECP. You may also see new signs saying “part of the King Charles III England Coast Path”. If you find an existing trail is different to the route of the KCIII ECP, you can choose which one to take. Keep an eye out for diversions and restrictions, for example following severe weather events.

On Ordnance Survey Explorer (1:25,000 scale) maps you will see the KCIII ECP shown as green diamonds and the margin shaded pink.

Wellbeing by the coast

National Walking Month is a chance to enjoy Cornwall’s scenery and feels especially restorative as part of a stay at Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa. After time on the coast path, return to the comfort of the hotel for a relaxing dinner in Dune Restaurant, a rest in Fistral Spa, and well-earnt quiet drink with a view in Bay Bar.

From short morning strolls to start the day to longer clifftop walks and sunset views, Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa is perfectly placed for exploring the Cornish coast.
